Itunes store account activation with a gift card?

I got a gift card for christmas but I don't have a store account yet. I was wondering, since I can't sign up today, can I activate and use an iTunes store account with the gift card? If it helps, it's only $15 but I plan on getting a ton of free apps, so I was just wondering if it was possible.
