Is it necessary to make a iTunes Store account?

Im planning on getting a iPod Touch (2G) very soon. I was just wondering, is it necessary to make an iTunes Store account? I heard you might need one to get Applications and other stuff for the iPod Touch.|||Yup. It will be necessary. Even if you just want to download free apps, you will need an iTunes store account.|||If for no other reason, the software updates.
